Cellular rubber seals

Cellular rubber is also known as cellular rubber and is a closed-cell, foam-shaped elastomer. The material is used, among other things, for insulation, sealing, soft bearings, isolation and deadening.

Cellular rubber

Available cellular rubbers at Rehm Dichtungen Ehlers GmbH

We supply cellular rubber in sheet form. Our various manufacturing processes allow us to process cellular rubber into individual products, such as blanks, gaskets or flat gaskets or strips. During production, we keep the degree of shrinkage as low as possible. Our measured values are the standard for determining the possible tolerable deviations and are relevant to the evaluation of the acceptance of complaints.
We generally recommend that cellular rubber material always be processed immediately after receipt of goods.

The properties of cellular rubber as a sealing material

The basic framework for cellular rubbers are elastomers to which auxiliary materials such as fillers, plasticisers, anti-ageing agents and others are added. Altogether, there are four main groups of elastomer compounds that are processed into cellular rubber:

  • Natural rubber
  • EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)
  • CR (chloroprene rubber)
  • NBR (acrylonitrile butadiene rubber)

Cellular rubber is produced in an expansion process. The cells of the resulting foam-like elastomer are not connected to each other - for this reason, cellular rubber is waterproof and airtight. The material is usually vulcanised in moulds and then cut into sheets. Due to vulcanisation, the material shrinks over time as gas driven into the cells gradually escapes. The higher the temperature load on the cell seal and the thinner the material, the higher the shrinkage.

The advantages and material properties of the various cellular rubber

Cellular rubber is characterised by a number of technical properties that make the material usable as a sealing material in various environments.

is cellular rubber:

  • Excellent sealing
  • temperature-resistant
  • Highly ageing resistant

Furthermore, the material has a low thermal conductivity value and therefore insulates well. Due to its high compressibility, good damping properties and water impermeability, cellular rubber is suitable for many areas of application. Furthermore, cellular rubber is easy to compress. In addition, self-adhesive cellular rubber enables simple and clean installation.

Areas of application for cellular rubber seals

Thanks to its properties, cellular rubber is a versatile material. For example, cellular rubber can be used as a gasket or flat seal, shock absorber or edge protector. Cellular rubber is suitable for use in industries such as the automotive sector, the construction industry, but also in electrical and air conditioning technology as well as in the aerospace industry. In addition, the material is also used in medical technology and in the sports & leisure sector due to its biocompatible properties.

FAQ

What are cellular rubber seals?
Cellular rubber gaskets are gaskets made of cellular rubber, also known as cellular rubber. Cellular rubber is a closed-cell, foam-like elastomer.
Can cellular rubber also be equipped with self-adhesive?
Cell rubber mats or cell rubber sheets can be excellently equipped with a self-adhesive film. After finishing, the one-sided self-adhesive cellular rubber is processed into your self-adhesive cellular rubber seals using our various manufacturing processes - waterjet cutting, plotting and die-cutting.
What are the properties of cellular rubber?
Cellular rubber is produced in an expansion process and is waterproof and airtight due to the non-interconnected cells. The application temperature range for CR/NBR cell ular rubber is between -40°C and 100°C, whereas for EPDM cellular rubber it is between -40°C and 90°C. Furthermore, cellular rubber has a low thermal conductivity value and can therefore be used for insulation. Thanks to its high compressibility, good damping properties and impermeability to water, cellular rubber is suitable for a wide range of applications.
What resistances do cellular rubber seals offer?
Cellular rubber CR/NBR is resistant to heat and various weather conditions. Furthermore, CR/NBR cellular rubber is resistant to light acids, oil and alkalis. EPDM cellular rubber is highly resistant to ageing, ozone and UV light. On this basis, EPDM cell rubber can also be used well outdoors.
Which cellular rubber is available from Rehm Dichtungen?
At Rehm Dichtungen Ehlers GmbH, you can obtain cellular rubber in various qualities. We stock cellular rubber CR/NBR quality UL94 in thicknesses from 2 mm to 20 mm as standard. We stock cellular rubber EPDM up to a thickness of 40 mm.
In which forms can cellular rubber be obtained from Rehm Dichtungen?
As with all our gasket materials, we use cellular rubber to make the right gaskets for you using our various manufacturing processes - waterjet cutting, plotting, punching. In addition to the manufactured cellular rubber gaskets, we can also cut cellular rubber sheets or cellular rubber strips to the desired length and width. Finally, you can also purchase cellular rubber sheets from us as yard goods for your own production. All of our cellular rubber products can also be self-adhesive on one side.
