Polyurethane seals

Polyurethane, also abbreviated as PU or PUR, belongs to the group of urethane plastics and can be found as both foam and rigid plastic. PU is used in the industrial environment as a roller or sealing material. The material is particularly well suited in applications where high wear resistance is required.

The properties of polyurethane as a sealing material

Polyurethane is based on the components dialcohols and diisocyanates. PU is formed by a polyaddition reaction of the two substances. Depending on the degree of cross-linking, polyurethane produces thermosets, thermoplastics or elastomers. Accordingly, the material has different mechanical properties - from hard to soft and elastic.

The advantages and material properties of polyurethane at a glance

Polyurethane is an excellent sealing material for many uses and application environments.
The material is among others:

  • low-wear
  • Weather and ozone resistant
  • Resistant to oils, greases and weak acids
  • tear-resistant
  • Very flexible

Furthermore, PU does not age in free air and has a high mechanical strength.

Here you can find a resistance list of polyurethane.

Areas of application for polyurethane seals

The material is used in the automotive and mechanical engineering industries. Other areas of application for polyurethane are shipbuilding, the materials handling industry and pneumatics. PU can be used, for example, as buffers, seals or profiles.
We will be happy to answer your questions about whether the elastomer is also suitable for your purposes. Please contact our customer service, who will be happy to provide you with comprehensive advice.

FAQ

What are polyurethane seals?
Polyurethane belongs to the group of urethane plastics and is therefore classified as a plastic sealant. Polyurethane as a sealing material is generally available to us in the form of sheets. The polyurethane sheets supplied by the manufacturer are produced into your individual seals using various manufacturing processes.
What are the properties of polyurethane seals?
Polyurethane seals have excellent abrasion properties compared to rubber seals. Furthermore, polyurethanes have an excellent deformability, which means that they return to their original shape as far as possible after being relieved of pressure. Due to the high wear resistance of polyurethane sheets, all seals or gaskets made of polyurethane can be produced for all applications.
What resistance do polyurethane seals offer?
Polyurethane seals have good resistance to oils, greases and weak acids. Polyurethane is also resistant to weathering and ozone. You can find further resistances in our polyurethane resistance list.
Can polyurethane seals also be equipped with self-adhesive?
The sealing material polyurethane can be equipped with basic self-adhesive. In the first production step, the unprocessed polyurethane sheets are glued with a self-adhesive film in order to produce your self-adhesive polyurethane seals.
Are polyurethane seals temperature resistant?
In the temperature range between -40 and +80 degrees Celsius, polyurethane sealing material can be considered temperature-resistant.
In which forms can polyurethane be obtained from Rehm Dichtungen?
As with all our gasket materials, we use polyurethane to produce the right gaskets, flat gaskets or blanks for you using our various manufacturing processes - water jet cutting, plotting, punching. In addition to the manufactured polyurethane gaskets, we can also cut the polyurethane sheets to your desired dimensions in length and width. Finally, you can also purchase polyurethane sheets from us as unprocessed yard goods for your own production. All of our polyurethane products can also be equipped with self-adhesive on one side.
Which polyurethane is available from Rehm Dichtungen?
At Rehm Dichtungen Ehlers GmbH, you can obtain polyurethane D44 brown in Shore hardnesses 70, 80 and 90 Shore. We stock all Shore hardnesses in thicknesses from 1 mm to 30 mm as standard.
